Fly Away with Me, StencilGirl & Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge #10!

You don't have to ask me twice to get messy when it comes to art, so when I read Challenge #10 from Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge Blog ~ I was scrambling to pull out supplies and make a lovely artsy mess! 

Challenge #10 Spray It! Ink It! Paint It! Smear It! Emboss It!

Show us your inner mixed media diva! Use spray mists, inks, paints, modeling paste, embossing powder, pastels, chalk, and whatever messy media you can find! Let's dig into that hoard, pull out some of that "messy stuff," and use it up! There is a mess-maker hiding in all of you! Let her/him out to play!

I started with a canvas I have in my pile of canvases with backgrounds but nothing else on them.  I call it my Lonely Tribe of Backgrounds - there are quite a few!  This one in particular I had created this amazing background with Golden Fluid Acrylic paints and glazing medium.  I allowed it dry for 24 hours and got this scrumptious background.

I began by layering different stencils with some paint to try and "unstick" my mind.  I had no plan at this point.  I love using lots of different stencils for texture and helping me free my creativity.  Read at the end of my post for the StencilGirl stencils I used.  I know, I know "Holy Stencil Hoarding!" :)

I started with the Queen Anne Lace stencil, only using the top part.  This made my background remind me of the sea and the "lace" looked like coral to me.

I used some of the stencils with Heidi Swapp Color Shine sprays in various colors. I love these iridescent sprays because they are waterproof and oh so shimmery!

I started seeing an underwater picture and sketched out some fish.  But then I got majorly stuck.  I didn't want to cover anything but it was too chaotic to leave it like it was...so I went a completely different route.

 I scrapped the underwater scene because there was so much of the background I loved that I would lose by having to 'paint out' with water.  I decided to sketch out a butterfly with my stabilo pencil in black.  These pencils are great because they erase with a little spritz of water and wipe with a paper towel.

I used wood icing for texture with Carolyn Dube's Uplifting Words stencil and Nathalie Kalbach's What's the Point? stencil.

I began painting around the butterfly with titanium white to bring it out and separate it from the background.  I allowed lots of drippage because I think drips are gorgeous!

I continued with layers of color using splashes of Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay India inks   and Daler Rowney India inks~ my favorite is the light green (it should be called lime green)! I also used lemon yellow, flame orange, teal and flame red.

 To add detailing to the butterfly, I began doodling on top of it with my white Fine Point Sharpie.  I continued to add other India inks for more color and depth around the wood icing.

Yee Haw!

Oh I was feeling kind of spicy when I made this next piece.  As you know I have a "thing" for feet…love to paint and photograph them.  Love what our feet, shoes and posture say about our personalities. So it is no surprise, I decided to paint myself a sassy pair of cowgirl boots!

I started out with my wood canvas, sketched my boots and then for AH-mazing texture…added some wood icing + StencilGirl stencils.  I used Nathalie Kalbach's Crackle Stencil on the body of my boot.

I used Seth Apter's Numbers stencil in my floor and around the canvas for some fun textured elements.

And I used Carolyn Dube's Wonky Eyes stencil in my dress.

I actually kind of like it all wood and natural, but I HAD to add some color!

And this is what we got !

The numbers "5678" sound like a perfect lead into a line dance, yes???

So my only wish is they sold these boots. Because this cowgirl would so be wearing them!

What we are Grateful For...a blog hop with Jane LaFazio & StencilGirl

Today I am using Jane LaFazio's Red Oak stencil from StencilGirl to make a project for my home.  Come join me!

I decided to something completely different for this project than my "normal" thing. I wanted to create something we could use this year at the Thanksgiving table and I thought about creating a menu that sat up on an easel....wouldn't that be cute? But, seeing as I have no idea what the menu will actually be yet, I went with something that stood the test of time.

I had each member of my family quickly write down 5 things they were grateful for.  I wrote five too.  With these five things (20 all together) I created a wall hanging or tabletop piece for the holiday, that will be great to have out for the entire month.

Supplies I used:

11x14 canvas panel

gesso

acrylic paint

Jane LaFazio's Red Oak Stencil

Ranger's Adirondack spray mist

Krylon Matte fixative

wood icing

Faber Castell markers

burlap

adhesive

chip board letters

First thing I did was gesso the panel and let it dry.

I then took two acrylic paints (warm grey and flesh) and dotted the panel randomly.  I spread with a palette knife.  I decided it looked too neutral and added in a dark brown, using the same method.

I then took Jane LaFazio's Texas Red Oak stencil and laid it over the panel, spraying in random areas for a subtle patterned look.

I sealed the panel at this point, because I knew I would be using matte medium and other paints that might make the spray mist run and smear.

I cut up the five things each family member wrote down...keeping it their own handwriting was important to me. It made it personal and special to us.

I glued the words and phrases down with a gel matte medium and let it dry.

I then took Jane's stencil (which I had cleaned) and went around the words with wood icing (also available through StencilGirl Products).  I really liked using the wood icing in this project because it gave the piece the woody, earthy look I was trying to achieve. I let the wood icing dry and immediately cleaned the stencil.

So this is what it looks like so far.  I decided it needed some contrast and used my Faber Castell marker in brown and very subtly shaded some acorns and leaves through the wood icing.

I cut two strips of burlap and folded along the top with the chip board letters spelling out Grateful.  I cut a couple hearts and adhered them to the bottom of the piece.

 I added a ribbon and hung it up in my dining room for the season! I personally LOVE the fact that is full of imperfection, like us.  Each little bit of handwriting shows the different voices that live in our home and makes it special to me.
